Homemade Sambhar powder

  • Red Chillies – 1 kg
  • Dhania (coriander seeds) – 1 1/2 kgs
  • Black pepper – 200 grams
  • Cumin seeds – 200 grams
  • Chana dhal – 100 grams
  • Toor dhal – 100 grams
  • Urad dhal – 50 grams
  • Rice – 50 grams


  1. Toast the all the ingredients on  a very low flame until you get a nice aroma.
  2. Allow it to cool and grind it to a fine powder.
  3. Store it in a air tight container.

Idli podi….amma’s way!

I was going through my site couple of days back and realized i haven’t posted a recipe in a longtime.Juggling between kid ,india trip and move in preparations leaves me with no time . This is gonna be our first trip to India after marriage together. My last visit which was in january,2006 was cut short to two weeks unfortunately :(….It was supposed to be a one month visit and I just couldn’t do anything that i wanted to do in two weeks.We are all thrilled about our india trip and  I cann’t wait to meet my niece,friends ,shop for new house and ofcourse eat a lot of indian FOOD. Speaking of food, My sister kept telling me what she got to enjoy and  what i missed out on during her stay in india..This time I am gonna make up for it BIGTIME! 🙂 It’s gonna  take a longtime for me to get blogging about food again.So in the meantime ,I just thought i’ll share my amma’s idli podi recipe with you guys.here it goes…..


  • Chana dhal – 1/2 kg
  • Urad dhal – 400 grams
  • Red Chillies – 10
  • Curry Leaves – 2 sprigs
  • Asafoetida – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garlic (very important ingredient) – 5 big cloves
  • Oil


1. Add about a teaspoon of oil and toast all the above ingredients except garlic in a pan on a low flame.

2. Turn off the heat when you get a nice aroma.

3. Add garlic,salt  and all the above ingredients to a mixer and grind it coarsely.

4.Let it cool for a while and store it in a airtighr container.

5. Add oil or ghee to idli podi and serve it with hot idlis.
